Theory Test Pass Certificate: How Long It Lasts and What to Do If You Lose It

When you pass your theory test, you get a letter with a pass certificate number at the test centre. The number lasts for 2 years, and you must pass your driving test in that time or take the theory test again. If you lose the letter, you do not need a replacement for a car driving test: the examiner checks your pass before the test starts.

Most questions about the theory test pass certificate come down to two worries: how long it lasts, and what happens if you lose it. This guide answers both, using GOV.UK’s guidance for car, motorcycle, lorry and bus learners, and explains the one thing GOV.UK’s own pages say slightly differently.

What is the theory test pass certificate?

It is the letter you are given at the test centre when you pass both parts of the theory test (our guide on how to book your theory test covers the step before): the multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception test. The important part is the pass certificate number printed on it, which shows DVSA that you have passed.

You get your result at the test centre before you leave. If you fail, you get a letter showing which parts you did not score enough on, and you must take both parts again. Our guide to how long the theory test takes covers the day itself.

How long does a theory test pass certificate last?

GOV.UK says your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your practical driving test in that time, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again, and pay the £23 fee again. Our guide to theory test costs has the current fees.

Theory testHow long the pass lastsWhat you must do in that time
Car2 yearsPass your car driving test
Motorcycle and moped2 yearsPass both modules of the motorcycle test
Lorry and bus (Driver CPC part 1)2 years from when you passed the first partPass the other part and your practical tests

To work out your end date, count 2 years from the day you passed. If you are not sure of the date, check the booking confirmation email for your theory test appointment.

GOV.UK does not give any way to extend a pass certificate. During the pandemic, people asked Parliament to extend end dates, but a 2020 petition on the petitions website was rejected because a very similar petition already existed.

If you lose it, you usually do not need the number to book your driving test, you need nothing for a car driving test because the examiner checks, for other tests DVSA sends a letter, and Northern Ireland certificates can be replaced by email.

Do you need the number to book your driving test?

GOV.UK’s pages say this in two slightly different ways. The theory test result page says you need your pass certificate number when you book and take your driving test. The page for lost numbers says you usually do not need it to book, and that you only need to request it if DVSA asks for it.

In practice, the booking service asks for your driving licence number, and you must usually have passed your theory test before you can book. If DVSA asks for your pass certificate number and you do not have it, you can request it online.

Do you need to take it to your driving test?

For a car driving test, GOV.UK lists only three things you must take: a car, your UK driving licence, and your theory test certificate if you took your theory test in Northern Ireland. If you have lost a certificate from a test in Great Britain, you do not need a replacement, because your driving examiner checks that you have passed before the test starts.

For any other type of driving test, such as a motorcycle, lorry or bus test, you may need another way to prove you have passed. See our checklist of what to bring to your driving test for everything else you need on the day.

Lost your theory test pass certificate? What to do

If you need the number to book

Request your pass certificate number online through the theory test booking service. You will need:

  • your UK driving licence
  • your booking reference number, which was sent to the email address you used to book your theory test

If you cannot find your booking reference, you can ask for your booking details in the same service. Your pass certificate number is then sent to the email address you used to book your theory test.

If you are taking a car driving test

You do not need to do anything. Your examiner checks your pass before the test starts.

If you are taking any other type of driving test

Contact DVSA with your full name as it appears on your driving licence, your address, your driving licence number and your date of birth. DVSA will send you a letter that you can take to your test instead of your pass certificate.

If you took your theory test in Northern Ireland

Email DVSA customer services to ask for a replacement theory test certificate. Include your name, your provisional licence number and the reason you need a replacement.

DVSA’s theory test enquiries team can be reached at theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk or on 0300 200 1122 (press 01), Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Theory pass certificate or driving test pass certificate?

They are different documents. The theory test pass certificate is the letter you get after your theory test. The driving test pass certificate is what your examiner gives you when you pass your practical test. At that point the examiner asks whether you want your full licence sent to you automatically. If you do not hand over your provisional licence, you must apply for your full licence yourself within 2 years of passing.

If you are still preparing, try our free mock theory test and read our guide to the hazard perception test, the part most people find harder to practise.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a theory test pass certificate last?

2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again.

Do I need to bring my theory pass certificate to my driving test?

Not for a car driving test, unless you took your theory test in Northern Ireland. Your examiner checks that you have passed before the test starts. For other types of driving test, take the certificate, or a letter from DVSA if you have lost it.

How can I check when my theory test pass certificate expires?

Count 2 years from the date you passed your theory test. If you are not sure of the date, it is the date of the theory test appointment you booked, which was in your booking confirmation email.

What is the theory test pass certificate number?

It is the number printed on the letter you get at the test centre when you pass. It is the proof that you passed, and it lasts for 2 years.

I have lost my theory test pass certificate. What should I do?

For a car driving test you do not need to do anything, because the examiner checks your pass. If DVSA asks for the number when you book, request it online using your licence and your theory test booking reference, and it will be emailed to you.

Can I get a copy of my driving test pass certificate?

That is a different document: the certificate you get when you pass your practical test. GOV.UK’s driving test guidance does not describe a copy service. If you did not hand your provisional licence to the examiner, you can apply for your full licence yourself within 2 years of passing.

Can I extend my theory test pass certificate?

GOV.UK does not give any way to extend it. If it runs out before you pass your driving test, you have to take the theory test again.

Can you buy a theory test pass certificate?

No. The only way to get one is to pass the test, and your examiner checks DVSA’s records rather than a piece of paper. Anything sold online is a scam.
