Last checked: 28 October 2026

Take a free mock theory test below. It follows the real car theory test: 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, with a pass mark of 43. Every answer comes with an explanation and the Highway Code rule it’s based on. There’s no sign-up, and nothing you enter is saved.

These are RoadReadyHub’s own practice questions, written from The Highway Code. They are not DVSA’s official test questions. The clip questions use our own animated clips, not DVSA’s, and this mock doesn’t include the hazard perception part. Your answers aren’t sent or saved. How this mock theory test works

  • Full mock test: 50 questions against a 57-minute clock, including 3 questions on one short clip, as in the real test, and at least 10 questions with a road sign, photo or diagram. As in the real test, you can flag questions, jump between them and change your answers. You get your score, a pass or fail against the 43 mark, and a breakdown by topic at the end.
  • Pictures and clips: every question that has a road sign, photo, diagram or animated clip, with the answer after each one.
  • nn
  • Quick practice: 10 questions with no timer, including 3 on a clip and at least 3 with a picture. After each one you see the right answer, why it’s right and which Highway Code rule covers it.
  • Practise by topic: pick one topic, such as motorways or road signs, and work through every question on it with instant feedback.
  • A fresh mix every time: each test draws from a bank of 190 questions and takes an equal share from all 10 topics, with the answers in a different order.
  • Review what you got wrong: the results list every question you missed with the correct answer and the rule to revise.

How the real theory test works

The car theory test has two parts, taken one after the other. You must pass both in the same sitting.

PartWhat it involvesPass mark
Multiple-choice questions50 questions in 57 minutes. Three of them are about a short, silent video clip of a normal driving situation43 out of 50
Hazard perception14 video clips of everyday road scenes. You score up to 5 points for each developing hazard you spot, and one clip has 2 hazards44 out of 75

You can have a break of up to 3 minutes between the two parts. In the hazard perception part you only get one attempt at each clip, and you won’t score anything if you click continuously or in a pattern. Our guides cover how hazard perception is scored, how long the theory test takes and what it costs.

What this mock test doesn’t do

We’d rather be upfront about the limits:

  • These aren’t DVSA’s questions. We wrote every question ourselves from The Highway Code and checked each answer against the rule it cites. The real test uses DVSA’s own question bank.
  • The real test draws on three books: The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving: the essential skills. Our bank is based on the first, and includes 25 road sign questions with pictures of the signs as they appear in The Highway Code.
  • Our clips are animations, not DVSA’s. Some questions use short animated clips seen from above, which we made to show a situation clearly. The real test uses filmed clips. This mock doesn’t include the hazard perception part.

For those reasons, use this alongside the official material, not instead of it. GOV.UK has a free official practice theory test. Its questions aren’t used in the real test either, but they’re based on the same topics.

How to revise for the theory test

  • Read The Highway Code itself. It’s free on GOV.UK, and the rule numbers in our explanations take you to the right section.
  • Use the official books or the Official DVSA Theory Test kit, which also helps with hazard perception.
  • Start driving lessons alongside your revision. DVSA research found that learners who hadn’t taken any lessons before their theory test were 16% more likely to fail the multiple-choice part first time.
  • Take mock tests until you pass comfortably every time, not just once.

If you don’t pass the real test

You’ll get a letter at the test centre telling you which parts you didn’t score enough on. You have to book and take the full test again, even if you passed one part, and you must wait at least 3 working days. When you pass, your certificate number lasts 2 years: pass your driving test in that time or you’ll need to take the theory test again. Riders can use our motorbike theory test practice instead.
