There’s no official waiting list or cancellation list for driving tests. Earlier tests, often called cancellations, appear on GOV.UK’s change service whenever another learner changes or cancels, at any time of the week. Brand new tests are released at 6am every Monday, 24 weeks ahead. You can change a car test up to 2 times, and you must do it yourself.
Waiting months for a driving test is frustrating, and it’s why so many learners go looking for cancellations. The good news is that the official way is free and open to everyone. The catch is that it rewards persistence, and a couple of rules can cost you your test fee or your chance to change if you don’t know them.
This guide covers car driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales, which are booked through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Northern Ireland has a separate service.
How driving test cancellations work
Test slots reach the booking system in two ways:
- New appointments are added 24 weeks in advance and released at 6am every Monday.
- Earlier appointments appear whenever another learner changes or cancels their test. This can happen at any time during the week.
There’s no queue to join and nobody to call to put your name down. If you want an earlier date, the only official way is to keep checking the change service yourself and grab a slot when one appears.

How to find an earlier driving test
You need to have booked a test first. Then:
- Have your UK driving licence number ready, along with your driving test reference number or your theory test pass certificate number.
- Go to GOV.UK’s change your driving test appointment service. It’s open from 6am to 11:40pm.
- Search for an earlier date at your test centre or a nearby one.
- If a slot you can make appears, book it straight away. Other learners can see the same earlier dates, so it may not be there if you come back later.
If the service shows messages such as “error 15” or “search limit reached”, GOV.UK has a help page for problems accessing the online booking service.
What is the best time to check for cancellations?
There are two moments worth knowing about. The first is 6am on Monday, when a new week of appointments is released 24 weeks ahead. That helps if you haven’t booked yet or you’re happy with a date about six months away.
For genuinely earlier dates, there isn’t a fixed time. Cancellations appear whenever someone else changes or cancels, so the honest answer is “often”. Checking at different times of day, and more than once a day, gives you more chances than checking at the same time every morning.
Don’t waste your 2 changes
This is the rule most likely to catch you out. You can only change a car driving test appointment 2 times (other tests can be changed 6 times). Taking an earlier cancellation counts as a change.
Changing more than one thing at once only counts once. GOV.UK’s example is moving a test from Northampton on 4 June to Kettering on 12 May: that’s a single change, even though both the date and the centre moved.
Our advice: don’t spend a change to move your test by a few days. Save your changes for a date that makes a real difference, and make sure you’ll actually be ready. An earlier test isn’t a win if you’re not ready to pass it.
Can you change your test centre?
Yes, but with limits. GOV.UK says to book at the test centre you intend to use, because since 9 June 2026 you can only move a car test to one of the 3 test centres nearest to where it is booked, or back to the centre you first booked. So if a centre further away has earlier dates, you may not be able to switch to it later. You can compare centres in our guide to driving test pass rates by test centre, which also shows each centre’s median waiting time.
Are driving test cancellation apps worth it?
Cancellation apps and websites are a popular search, but it’s worth knowing the official rules before you pay for one:
- You must book and change your car test yourself. Your driving instructor isn’t allowed to do it for you.
- You’re not allowed to change, swap or cancel a car driving test for someone else.
- It’s against the law to book a car driving test for someone else.
- Booking through GOV.UK costs the official fee. GOV.UK notes that unofficial websites usually charge more.
Since June 2026, GOV.UK has been clear that you are not allowed to use unofficial services that scan the driving test booking service for appointments, and that includes cancellation finder websites and apps. DVSA monitors the booking service, and if you break the terms it can suspend your online access, so you can only book by phone, or cancel your booking. Checking the official service yourself is free. Our step-by-step guide on how to book a driving test covers all the 2026 rules.
Is there a fast track driving test?
No. There’s no paid option on GOV.UK to jump the queue. “Fast track” or intensive driving courses can speed up your lessons, but your practical test still has to be booked under the same DVSA rules as everyone else’s. If a company promises a guaranteed quick test date, ask exactly how, and check it against the rules above.
Moving or cancelling without losing your fee
You can change or cancel a test right up until it starts, but you need to give enough notice to avoid paying again:
| Test | Notice needed to change or cancel for free |
|---|---|
| Car driving test | At least 10 full working days |
| All other tests | At least 3 full working days |
Monday to Saturday count as working days, but Sundays and public holidays don’t. If you have to cancel at short notice because of illness or injury, a bereavement, a school or college exam, or because your driving licence was stolen, you may still get a refund. Email DVSA with the subject “Unavoidable short notice cancellation” and attach proof. The full details are on the cancel your driving test page.
If you fail your test, you need to book and pay for a new one, with a date at least 10 working days away. Our driving test cost guide covers the fees, and what you can claim back if DVSA cancels your test at short notice.
While you wait
A long wait is also time to prepare. Make sure your licence is safe and up to date, because you can’t take the test without it, and read our guides to what happens on the day and the show me, tell me questions.
Northern Ireland
There’s a different service for booking and changing driving tests in Northern Ireland. Check the details on nidirect.
