You book your driving test yourself, online at GOV.UK, using your driving licence number and a debit or credit card. A car test costs £62 on a weekday or £75 in the evening, at weekends or on bank holidays. Appointments are released 24 weeks ahead every Monday at 6am. Since 2026, only you can book or change a car test, you can make only 2 changes and you can only move it to one of the 3 nearest test centres.

The rules for booking a car driving test changed several times in 2026, and many guides have not caught up. Some of the websites that still rank for this search offer services that are now against the rules. This guide explains how to book on GOV.UK step by step, what the new rules mean for you, how to find an earlier test legitimately, and how booking works in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Before you book

Check three things first:

  • You have passed your theory test. You usually must pass it before you can book. The exceptions are taxi tests, tractor tests and most “upgrade” tests.
  • You live in Great Britain. You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your test.
  • You and your instructor agree you are ready. GOV.UK advises choosing a date you realistically expect to be ready by, because you can only make 2 changes.

What you need

  • your UK driving licence number
  • a debit or credit card
  • your driving instructor’s personal reference number, if you want to check they are available on the date you choose

How to book your driving test: step by step

  1. Go to “Book your driving test” on GOV.UK and select Start now. The service runs from 6am to 11:40pm, and you may be placed in a queue when it is busy.
  2. Enter your details, including your driving licence number.
  3. Confirm that you are the learner who will be taking the test, and agree to the terms and conditions.
  4. Choose a test centre. Only book at a centre you intend to use, because you can only move your test to nearby centres later.
  5. Choose a date and time. Once you select an appointment and accept the timing warning, you have 15 minutes to complete the booking.
  6. Pay the fee and keep the confirmation email. It shows the latest date you can change or cancel for free.
Infographic: a car driving test costs 62 pounds on weekdays and 75 pounds in the evening or at weekends. Appointments are released 24 weeks ahead every Monday at 6am, and the median wait for learners tested in September 2026 was 11.6 weeks. Since 2026 you can make only 2 changes, only you can book or change your test, cancellation finder apps are not allowed and you can only move your test to the 3 nearest centres. You need 10 full working days notice to change or cancel a car test for free.

How much does a driving test cost?

Tests that start at 4:30pm or later count as evening tests. These are the GOV.UK prices, and GOV.UK notes that unofficial websites usually charge more. Our guide to driving test costs covers resits and the other fees you pay on the way to a full licence.

The 2026 booking rules

DVSA brought in new rules for car driving tests in stages during 2026. They apply in England, Scotland and Wales, and only to car tests.

What counts as a change

Changing the date or time, changing the test centre, or swapping your appointment with another learner each count as a change. Changing several things at once, such as the date and centre together, counts as one change. Updating your contact details, adding or removing your instructor’s reference number, or a change DVSA makes (for example, because of bad weather) does not count. If DVSA changes your test, you are reset to 2 changes.

Where you can move your test

You can move your test to any of the 3 centres nearest to where it is currently booked, or back to the centre you first booked on that booking. If you need more changes after using your 2, you have to cancel and book a new test. If you are deciding where to book, our driving test pass rates by test centre page lists the latest results and waiting times for every centre.

Helping someone else book

It is against the law to book, change or cancel a car test for someone else, but you can still help a friend or family member do it. They must be with you, do as many of the steps as they can themselves, and use an email address and phone number that they have easy access to.

How to find an earlier driving test

Earlier appointments, sometimes called cancellations, appear at any time when someone changes or cancels a test, or when DVSA adds examiner time. They are not released at 6am on Monday, so there is no point joining the Monday queue unless you want a test 24 weeks away. If you already have a test booked, use the GOV.UK service to change your appointment and keep checking.

  • There is no waiting list or cancellation list at most centres. A few centres that do not open every day offer an option to put your test “on hold”, and the service shows you if it is available.
  • DVSA cannot notify you when earlier appointments appear, and its customer service team cannot create new appointments.
  • Do not search repeatedly over a short period or use more than one device at once, or you may see a “search limit reached” or Error 15 message.
  • Do not use cancellation finder apps or websites. DVSA can suspend your online access or cancel your booking if you break the terms.

Our guide to driving test cancellations has more on using your changes wisely.

How long is the wait for a driving test?

GOV.UK publishes a monthly waiting figure. Half of all learners who took a car test in September 2026 had waited no more than 11.6 weeks. DVSA’s business plan for 2025 to 2026 sets a target of a national car test waiting time of 7 weeks or fewer.

Changing or cancelling your test

To change or cancel a car test without paying again, give at least 10 full working days’ notice. Monday to Saturday count as working days, but Sundays and public holidays do not. You can find your deadline in your confirmation email or by signing in to the booking service.

If you give less notice, you lose the fee, unless you had to change or cancel because of an illness or injury, a bereavement, a school or college exam, or a stolen licence. In those cases you can email DVSA with proof and the subject “Unavoidable short notice cancellation” to ask for a refund. Even without a refund, you can cancel right up to the start of the test, which frees the slot for someone else.

Booking again after failing

If you do not pass, you book and pay for a new test in the same way. The new date must be at least 10 working days away.

Booking in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

Scotland and Wales use the same GOV.UK service and rules as England.

Northern Ireland has its own service, run by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) on nidirect. You need your driver licence number and date of birth, a debit or credit card and an email address. Car test appointments are released three months ahead on the first working day of each month. From 1 October 2026, GB provisional licence holders cannot book a car test in Northern Ireland and need a Northern Ireland provisional licence.

After you book

Use the time to prepare. Our checklist of what to bring to your driving test covers your licence and the rules for using your own car, our guide to show me, tell me questions covers the vehicle safety questions, and how many minors you can have explains how the test is marked.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance can I book a driving test?

Up to 24 weeks. DVSA releases a new week of appointments at 6am every Monday, including bank holidays, and those appointments are 24 weeks in the future. Earlier slots appear whenever someone changes or cancels.

Is there an app to book a UK driving test?

There is no official booking app. You book and manage your test on GOV.UK through the driving test booking service. Unofficial apps and websites that scan the booking service for appointments are not allowed.

How can I book a driving test quickly?

There is no fast track. Book the next suitable date at the centre you intend to use, then check the change service regularly for earlier appointments, which can appear at any time. Do not search too often, or you may hit a search limit.

Can my driving instructor book my test?

No. Since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change or cancel a car driving test. Give your instructor’s reference number when you book so the service can check they are available.

How do I book a driving test after failing?

Book a new test through the same GOV.UK service and pay again. The new date must be at least 10 working days away.

Is 20 lessons enough to pass?

There is no minimum number of lessons, and GOV.UK says it depends on how quickly you learn. Agree with your instructor that you are ready before you book. Our guide to how many driving lessons you need explains what to look for.

How do I book a driving test in Scotland or London?

The same way as anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales, on GOV.UK. In busy areas, take extra care to book at the centre you really want, because you can only move a car test to one of the 3 nearest centres.

How do I book a driving test in Northern Ireland?

Use the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) booking service on nidirect. You need your driver licence number and date of birth, a debit or credit card and an email address. From 1 October 2026, you need a Northern Ireland provisional licence to book a car test there.
